Beyond the entrepreneur, Donald always supported the labor movement, ever since his early employment as an apprentice sheet metal worker in the 1930s. A pioneering spirit and true leader, Donald was known for his long-time involvement in labor relations work for the Toronto Construction Association (TCA).

Donald P. Giffin was given an unprecedented vote of confidence by the Toronto Construction Association (TCA) and its members, serving as President of the association in the late 1970s. Becoming the first man in TCA’s 110-year history to serve two consecutive terms, Don later went on to serve as the Canadian Construction Association (CCA) Chairman of the Board in 1983.

After stepping away from day-to-day operations of GIFFIN, Donald made a significant transition to the world of professional sports. In 1990, he was appointed President of Maple Leaf Gardens and Governor of the Toronto Maple Leaf’s. In this influential role, Donald was entrusted with overseeing operations of one of the NHL’s most storied franchises during a period of significant change. His involvement not only reinforced the Maple Leafs’ connection to their rich history but also bolstered the franchise’s path toward future success.

Expansion and Growth
(1980-2022) – Donald J.P. Giffin

Second generation, Donald J.P. Giffin began his journey with GIFFIN Sheet Metals Canada in 1969, gaining invaluable experience across the company’s operations. By 1980, he officially took the reins from his father, ushering in a period of remarkable growth. Under Don’s guidance, GIFFIN significantly expanded its footprint.

One of the first major milestones of his leadership was the establishment of the GIFFIN Inc. USA operations in Southfield, MI. This marked the beginning of an era defined by rapid expansion and pivotal strategic moves.

In the early 1980s, GIFFIN Inc. secured its first major automotive contract with GM in Framingham, MA, a game-changing achievement for the company. This success was soon followed by further expansions, including the establishment of a fabrication shop in Farmington, MI, in 1985.

In 1991, Don and his family relocated from Toronto to Detroit, fully embedding themselves in the heart of the U.S. automotive industry. By 1993, Don had become the sole owner of GIFFIN Inc. USA, and in 2000, he oversaw the establishment of GIFFIN Industries Mexico, further broadening the company’s international reach, becoming the well-respected GIFFIN enterprise.

With Don at the helm, GIFFIN achieved significant milestones and advancements, including the development of patented products and the successful execution of numerous award-winning greenfield and brownfield projects. Under his leadership, the company expanded its industry influence, becoming a trusted strategic partner for major OEMs, Tier Suppliers, and Industry Collaborators.

This led to tremendous operational growth, solidifying GIFFIN’s reputation for quality and timely delivery. The company earned prestigious accolades, such as the Q1 Award from Ford and secured major contracts with General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Rolls Royce, and Boeing.

– D. Richard Giffin

As GIFFIN moves into its third generation of leadership, the company continues to thrive under the guidance of Richard Giffin.

Richard joined the company in 2004, working his way up from the ground level by immersing himself in all aspects of GIFFIN’s operations. From learning the intricacies of field operations, purchasing, design, estimating, and later excelling and finding a home in sales. Establishing new relationships within automotive as well as emerging strategic partners in tier and heavy truck, Rich quickly demonstrated his leadership capabilities. His dedication and strategic thinking led him to the roles of Director of Sales, then Vice President of Sales.

In 2022, Richard Giffin stepped into his current role as President and CEO. Rich carries forward the Giffin legacy with a strong emphasis on innovation and a relentless focus on delivering customer-centric solutions. Under his leadership, the company’s headquarters in Auburn Hills, MI, has been transformed into a cutting-edge, state-of-the-art facility, doubling its capacity and positioning GIFFIN to support its ever-expanding operations.
